For the design of the torch, the producers were inspired by the Olympic style of the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange. Built by Nikkei Yanagi this torch is made of stainless steel and aluminum. With Tokyo the itinerary of the flame, the famous torch relay, reached considerable dimensions. Covering the total distance from Athens to Tokyo, Japan wanted to show the world its organizational talent. It earned indeed three awards by the International Olympic Committee: the Olympic Cup, the Bonacossa Trophy and the «Diploma of Merit». The 1964 Tokyo Games were the first to be held in Asia. Two new sports appeared: judo (men) and volleyball (men and women).
