Nationwide, from November 15 to April 15, it is mandatory to fit winter tires or snow chains must be on board (the so-called "snow socks" are considered equivalent to chains).
Each Italian province regulates this ordinance autonomously, and in Livigno, on the S.S.301 at the Foscagno Pass, winter tires or chains on board are mandatory from October 15 to April 30 (again, "snow socks" are considered equivalent to chains).
In Switzerland, winter tires are not mandatory during the cold months. However, the driver must always have full control of the vehicle in any circumstance and drive a safe vehicle. It is worth noting that driving with summer tires during the winter season can result in an administrative fine. Anyone causing an accident while driving an inadequately equipped car risks a reduction in the vehicle's performance or a claim from the insurance company.
By law, winter tires must have the "S" marking on the side. The "3PMSF" (3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake) marking with the symbol of a mountain with three peaks and a snowflake inside may also appear. If the "S" marking is not present, it is mandatory to have snow chains on board.
The Forcola Pass is closed during the winter period.
